Hyderabad airport to officially open Mar-08

GMR announced construction of the new Hyderabad International Airport is 69% complete and will be ready for commercial operations in Mar-08.

The cost of the project has risen by approximately USD245 million to USD600 million, after proposed passenger capacity was expanded from an initial 5 million to 12 million p/a. Details include;
USD150.3 million passenger terminal building; constructed by China State Construction Engineering Company;
  • 4,260 m runway and taxiway; will accomodate A380s;
  • Cargo terminal with capacity to handle 100,000 tonnes p/a;
  • Fuel supply system on open access basis;
  • 42 aircraft parking slots;
  • Lufthansa and Indian to establish MRO facilities;
  • 308 room airport hotel;

Meanwhile, GMR confirmed it is in talks with 15 foreign airlines, including British Airways and Saudi Arabian Airlines, to operate direct services to the new airport. The airport aims to function as a transit hub for services connecting Europe with Southeast Asian countries.
