Abu Dhabi International Airport is one of the few aviation hubs in the world to have achieved a healthy growth, while it has considerably outperformed the negative global average (-3.0%).

Aircraft movements increased by 9.4% whilst cargo recorded a 6.4% increase compared to the same month last year. Passenger traffic for the year to date (YTD) shows an increase of 8.2%, with 3,793,693 passengers handled through the airport during this period.

Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) has announced that Abu Dhabi based Elite Aviation, will commence services to two new destinations in Germany starting from 15-Jun-2009. The services will be operated by the German carrier Blue Wings. The first Elite Aviation aircraft, operated by Blue Wings, arrives in Abu Dhabi International Airport to a water-canon salute.

Dubai International Airport (DIA) is the only one of the world's top ten airports to report positive growth in both 4Q2008 and 1Q2009, though growth rates have slowed dramatically. Dubai Airports reported a 2% year-on-year increase in passenger numbers in 1Q2009 to just over 9.5 million passengers. Despite the slowdown, DIA's throughput in 1Q09 outpaced rival Singapore Changi International Airport for the fourth time over the last eight quarters.

Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) plans to invest USD12.3 billion in its airports until 2020, adding this figure could increase in the future. GACA is also in the process of establishing a new holding company to manage its 27 airports, initially to be government owned, with the possibility of being privatised sometime between 2012 and 2015. According to GACA President, Abdullah Rehaimi, “we’re very behind in the development of our airports, but we’re now transforming them into economic zones.”

The Seminar was arranged to follow up the major progress made at CANSO’s first Middle East ANSP Regional Conference, also held in Jeddah, January. The Conference identified 4 main action areas: safety, airspace planning, operational/technical issues, and ANSP Cooperation. The May Seminar has developed further plans in all four of these areas. The most significant move was the creation of a ‘Strategic Cooperation Group’ to develop an ATM Action Plan and vision for the region.

Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) has welcomed its 43rd airline to Abu Dhabi International Airport. The new route, established by Sun Air, a privately-operated Sudanese airline, will provide the UAE capital with another air link to Sudan's capital Khartoum.
